In March, we met with 2 families from a forming eco-village in Riscova and an established eco-village – „Sciastlivoe". Listening to their stories, we were impressed by their courage and commitment to make their dreams a reality. Moving out of the city to a rural area meant not just a geographical shift, but a major lifestyle change. As mentioned by Katea Mikitenko: „It makes you re-evaluate certain aspects of your daily life: how much water do you use in a day, how much trash do you produce, how do you interact with neihbors, what's your footprint in the nature..."
With many questions and experiences shared by all participants of the meeting, the discussion touched upon such themes as: adapting to a new lifestyle, plans vs. realities in eco-construction, child education, income generation, integration with neighboring communities, recycling in Moldova, managing conflicts, and many more.
The theme of sustainable living was further discussed in early May, after a screening of „Within Reach" movie (http://withinreachmovie.com/). It documents the journey of a young couple, who pedalled around the USA for 2 years, learning about sustainability from 100 eco-communities of all sorts: eco-villages, coops, cohousing and transition towns. As someone noted in our discussion after the movie, there were a few common features among those communities that were impressive: conscious effort to build strong relationships, sharing resources, nurturing self-awareness and caring for the environment. Over a cup of tea after the movie we talked about simple steps we are taking or could take to make our lifestyle more sustainable, from recycling to mindful consumption (ex. using natural cleaning supplies over chemical ones), from developing relationships with our neighbors to getting involved in eco-initiatives.
